Utah hearts online porn

p1Conservative and religious Americans tend to consume more online porn, according to this study (and thanks to Super-Sanctified Susan, Correspondent, who found the information on a break from her constant Bible study).

Utahns (Utahites?) are especially prone (tee-hee! it’s double-entendre night! again!) to the pastime. Eight of the top 10 porn-consuming states voted for John McCain in the last election.

From the study: In states where residents agreed with the sentence ”I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage,” citizens bought 3.6 more porn subscriptions per 1,000 than states where residents skewed liberal. There’s a silver lining, though: Church-goers tended to buy less porn on Sunday, though their consumption the rest of the week made up for the time they spent in church rather than at the keyboard.

Bless their hearts.

UPDATE: A DJ reader respectfully disagrees that the differences are all that significant.

Any time, DJ — and now back to Wikizekial and Googelations — big sermon in the morning.

  2. You *know* I’m as all-fired happy to denounce hypocrisy in conservatives as the next person, or more so … but after reading the study, I was pretty well convinced that the media seized a mouse and made it into an elephant. (Surprised?)

The most interesting thing in the survey, really, was how little variation there was.

I’ve written the Harvard professor who did the research and I’ll let y’all know if he gets back to me … I am sure he is having trouble keeping up with his messages these days.

    • Interesting. There wasn’t that much deviation — 5-something compared to 1-something per 1,000, but it was enough to 1. measure, and 2. make me giggle. Would be interesting if the professor gets back to you.

  3. Super-Sanctified Susan

Well, it WAS enough to “1. measure,” and considering the oft-proclaimed VALUES of some of the right, you’d have thought that the LEFT (with our obvious lack of values, morals, etc.) would have been off the charts. Just sayin……

  4. Porn correlates weirdly with politics. Opposition to porn on occasion has united conservative Christians with leftist feminists … and support of free speech, including porn, has brought together some pretty disparate interests over the years as well.

And let’s face it — the people in Utah who are watching porn could be mostly liberals! It’s pretty easy to rip through the methodology.

    • Though I would posit, just for argument’s sake, that if the same numbers are found in other conservative/religious states, one COULD suppose that, well, you get my drift.

  5. Porn correlates with wealth…more wealth, more ability to spend. While addictive, not nearly as a addictive substances.

  6. Super-Sanctified Susan

“…not nearly as a addictive substances.”

Maybe not as dangerous as those substances to the viewer, but pretty dangerous societally, I think. I’m not opposed to a little, y’know, excitement, but my impression of porn is that it’s so often based on humiliation of women (and sometimes outright cruelty to women).

  7. No question. I left out a word or two…I think I meant ‘as addicting as addictive substances.’ ” This was to separate between physical dependencies and emotional dependencies.

My only defense of porn will be found in the words of Tom Lehrer: “Dirty books are fun.” And then follow on with his song Smut.

I will point out that there is huge range of porn allowing nearly equal opportunity debasement of men and women. It is no longer just about humiliating women.

  8. Super-Sanctified Susan

You can see how much out of the loop (is that okay to say?) I am! And “dirty” and “smut” don’t necessarily connote debasement….

  9. As long as we don’t to de basement to tie me kangaroo down….

  10. So when are you coming to visit, tomgirl? ;-)
