Another assault on creationism

Scientists recently noted the oldest thing they’ve seen so far — a star that exploded 13 billion years ago.

That’s 200 million years older than the previously noted oldest-thing-we’ve-ever-seen.

To which a highly trained creationist would say (and say it with me): Big whup. God made the star’s explosion look older than it really is. The earth’s still only 6,000 years old. And you’re going to hell for thinking otherwise.

  1. I’ve always thought that argument sounded a lot like “God lies so you can have faith”

What an itsy-bitsy God, in my opinion.

How meaningful can faith be if it is based on being mislead?

  2. Hmmm…read this classic story, and you tell me.

  3. A good source of information about all areas of science and scripture is: http://www.doesgodexist.com/

  4. If creationists say that the earth is 6000 years old, then what do they say about the rest of the universe?

    • I believe that holds true for the rest of the universe, 6,000 years. Any creationists out there want to back me up?

  5. datingjesus – thank you so much for telling us all what we should believe. It’s such a relief to know that the key to escaping eternal damnation lies in believing that the age of Earth is far less than it possibly could be and not in, say, having faith in Jesus Christ and living my life for others. Honestly, how could I have gone so wrong?

    • Ry, welcome to the conversation. In fact, it is the strict policy of DJ not to tell people what to believe, but to randomly present items for discussion. You’re new here, but the conversation does often go toward service to others, either in service to Jesus or not. As for how you could have gone so wrong, well, only you can answer that. Did you go wrong?

I figured once I read this article on CNN there would be someone claiming it was an assault on christianity/faith/”family values”.

    • Yeah, but I swear on anything you consider important that not all Christians have that reaction, I promise.

      • ContentlyAtheist

I don’t doubt you. But the overwhelming screaming and bickering from the people calling themselves the “morality of america” drowns out everything else.

        • Yeah, I understand that. It’s a shame, because I’m not convinced the oroginal intent was to the Cosmic Sunday School Teacher, but that’s just me talking.

  7. I miss Ry already …

  8. Ahh…the long dark teatime of the soul. happens to me daily.

  9. We’ll both miss it when it’s gone though, huh.

I wonder if Ry knows he’s a Wowbagger for Jesus? The phrase would look great on a tee-shirt.

    • Is it your experience that Wowbaggers know they’re Wowbaggers?

      • Ooops, this page is getting to be a mess. My fault.

I think it is possible I have called a Wowbagger a Wowbagger before, just to inform him (it’s almost always a him) that he was one. Probably a long time ago.

It’s not a notion that they come up with independently, no. I don’t think that.
