When the president is a polygamist, who gets to be First Lady?

(Which, if you ask me, is and always has been a stupid title, given that Americans aren’t supposed to be that into royalty and such.)

But in South Africa, the new president has two wives and one fiancee. The new president embraces his Zulu roots, but not everyone is thrilled.

  1. Traditional polygamist marriages are not marriages of equals. There is usually a declared “first wife.”

Read Jon Krakauer’s “Under the Banner of Heaven” for an in-depth look at the fundamentalist Mormon church.

    • That’s what I understand and that was an awesome book. Do you watch “Big Love?” I keep meaning to but am a lot weirded out by it.

  2. Shawn M Lang

Zuma’s got a lot more problems than his polygamy. There’s a great article about him and the RSA elections in this month’s Economist.

  3. I love it. Not as good as the Sopranos or Six Feet Under, but a fascinating look at a subculture that few people understand exists. When I lived in Oregon, we were just a few miles from an FLDS enclave.

    • Alright. I need to drag my sorry carcass in front of HBO, then. All my friends really like the show. That, and “Breaking Bad,” which I do manage to watch with some regularity.
