This time four years ago…

Hurricane Katrina was gathering strength over the Gulf of Mexico.

Did we learn anything?

  1. Well, I’m depressed now.

Why is Bono singing with Green Day?

    • The two bands performed for the reopening of the Superdome. From http://www.rockintown.com/bios/U2.html: Bono and the rest of U2, along with Green Day performed during the pre-game show on ESPN’s Monday Night Football to celebrate the reopening of the Louisiana Superdome (severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina) in New Orleans. They played a live version of their recently recorded hurricane charity single, a cover of Scottish Punk band, the Skids, “The Saints Are Coming.” In a bit of a switch, it was The Edge who was out in front. “Every musician owes a little bit of a debt to New Orleans,” he said.

The two bands also played “Beautiful Day,” and Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” Performance footage was sold online to benefit Music Rising, an organization co-founded by The Edge that replaces musical instruments lost in ’05′s Gulf Coast storms.

  2. Some of us learned something, but I’m not sure the right some of us did.

  3. My sister and niece were in New Orleans then, to enroll my niece at Tulane. They were lucky — they had a rental car at their disposal and were able to get out in time.

  4. I did, but that’s sure as heck not a good reason for a hurricane.

    • I just wish my fellows in the press would have upheld our end of the deal and kept paying attention to issues of poverty — its symptoms, its causes, etc. Some have. Most moved on to more superfluous things.

      • What a coincidence! My son was working on a college essay about not forgetting the victims of Katrina once the stories disappear from the news. He learned plenty about that through working on homes that were waiting for repair this year. One look at the ninth ward and you can see that Katrina is still “there”. Interesting that the tourist areas were quickly rebuilt and so some visitors have no idea what horrible conditions exist elsewhere in neighborhoods.

        • …a good reason to wander away from the tour group, whatever your vacation plans. I mean this within reason, of course, but if we don’t keep this in mind, then we can pretend everything’s all better. And it’s not. Good for your son. Excellent college essay.

      • There’s no money in poverty.

Yes, you make quote me on that.
