This is what my lawyer friend explained. She had done extensive work on death penalty cases and was against it. I was surprised at this. Just one more reason the death penalty makes no sense. Other reasons make the death penalty not right….in my opinion.
Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, came to Trinity College when I was a student and made this very point. When all the moral reasons fail, hit ‘em in the wallet. I do however believe, as does Jac, that the moral reason is the higher of the two.
I agree. But I’ve learned over my long, long career as a professional arguer that sometimes, for some people, the moral argument isn’t interesting. Or even pertinent. I’d love to have heard Sister Helen’s take on this.

I agree, but if someone doesn’t want to argue the immorality of it, we can certainly argue the financial cost.
