Terry Schiavo died five years ago today

Here’s one medical ethicist’s take on the whole sad story.

  1. I can’t believe it’s been five years.
When she died, I couldn’t believe it had been so long. When they first went to court, I was still a child. When my parents saw the videos of her “responding” they saw my sister. They vehemently protested the whole thing. In their eyes it would be the same as letting my sister starve to death.
How awful that her husband had to fight that battle for so long.

    • That was one of those cases where every answer was going to hurt someone. I am familiar with a similar case that involved someone with whom I went to high school, Nancy Cruzan. I wasn’t close to her, but my father dated her mother when they both were in high school, and I believe at least one of my brothers was sweet on her. It was so very sad and that ripped that family apart.

So, would this be the wrong time to throw out a few Terry Schiavo jokes? I Googled her name to refresh my memory regarding a few points, and I found a few joke sites. Not funny, as it is no longer timely. Also, it was sad for everyone connected to her.
That whole show was a terrible scene.
At least now she is at peace.

    • Isn’t that weird? I googled her name, too, and the first thing that came up automatically beneath the search box was “terry schiavo jokes.” No thanks. No, really. I’m all set.

  3. When my mother, who was clearly (in the view of my sister and me and of the doctor) nearing the end of her life, I had to write a letter stating that she was not to have a feeding tube put in place (one nurse said “it takes 15 minutes to install and a court order to remove”). All of this is reinforcing the realization of my need to get my wishes formalized. I’ve already discussed it slightly with my sister, but I don’t want her to have to make the decision on her own.

  4. Thanks, Vegas. Of course the group title, Aging with Dignity, doesn’t include me, but oh well.
