When is teaching “Just say no” ineffective

Well, in sex education, for one, and thanks, DickG., for the link.

Abstaining from sex is a 100-percent effective means of birth control, as it says here. But it’s not that easy a concept to teach, and it’s most effective when included as part of a larger comprehensive sex education program.

  1. DJ – I absolutely LOVE the image you found to go along with this topic….. It really hits the nail on the head. Reminds me of this: “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”

The conservative mantra about “abstinence is the only 100% effective means of birth control,” while true, totally ignores the fact that many teens will NOT abstain – they simply will not. And THAT includes large numbers of those who have taken virginity-until-marriage pledges.

That does NOT mean that a broad-ranging sex education program that teaches about STDs, contraception, intimate relationships and the rest should fail to include strong emphasis on abstinence, because it should.
