(And please can you condemn “Dating Jesus?” Thank you.)
Before the Vatican condemned the book of Yale University’s own Sis. Margaret A. Farley’s, “Just Love: A Framewook for Christian Sexual Ethics,” the book was lounging around 143,000 in ranking at Amazon.
After? It had shot up to 19 at the time of the linked Post’s article. I just checked and it was at No. 16.
Go ahead, Sis. Margaret!
“It is of a different genre altogether.”
Got that from the title…Sexual Ethics…but wait…
Women masturbate?
Really?
…I mean…but…
……I just…well…
Are there pictures?
Listen, Pervy McPervperv. We have your home address and we will be visiting.
Okay…so…
No pictures…I’m fine with that…really…so much for Theory #1 on moving from 143,000 to 16 so quickly.
And it did take the Inquisitors only a couple of years to figure out what she what she was talking about so I just assumed there was probably some…well…learning aids…involved….
Do you think The Bishops knew?
Do you thin Dolan knew?
So…the Vatican finds out women masturbate…then attacks the LCWR.
Is that the “radical feminism” they’re afraid of? Does women masturbating pose a threat to religious liberty?
And how about the whole “going blind” thing…does that go for women, too?
I have GOT to get me one of those.
My mom’s paperback “Everything you always wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask” that she made sure was prominently visible to our Jr. High eye level on the bookshelf in the den didn’t cover ethics. It just described various aspects of human sexuality. It is horribly out of date now, of course.
But it was revolutionary for its time…
So — whaddya think they’re REALLY saying over there in that beautiful luxurious little city-state? Is it “Quick, how do we keep people from buying this book and thinking it’s okay to see things a little differently from the orthodox (anti-female, anti-non-procreative sexual) view that we enforce” or “Oh no children, this truly is not what Jesus would have wanted for you?”
Our friend Amy sent this along: The War on Gays by Chris Hedges — the graphic alone is worth the price of admission:

First it was the Vatican wanting everybody (Catholic or not) working for any Catholic-related entity (whether secular in nature [e.g., a hospital] or not) to be denied contraception because the Vatican’s view is that contraception is wrong.
Then it was the Vatican being all pissed off at a bunch of hard-working nuns (who practically everybody else in the world, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, seems to admire and support) because the nuns spent too much time and energy helping the sick, the poor and the down-trodden (you know, the stuff that Jesus Christ himself got all hot and bothered about) instead of putting out enough anti-homosexual, anti-abortion and anti-contraception messages to satisfy a bunch of celibate old men (none of which [as I understand it] Jesus even mentioned – not once).
Now it is the Vatican going after a highly regarded and extremely well-educated nun for writing a book about sex and ethics and the like. Again I’m struck by the fact that the Vatican is entirely run by a bunch of old, celibate men. Apparently the Vatican thinks the good professor has a “defective understanding” the Catholic theology as interpreted exclusively by, again, a bunch of old, celibate men. Has the Vatican ever considered the possibility that its own interpretation of Christianity might be defective? Keep in mind that I am NOT criticizing Catholicism or Catholics, merely wondering if the Vatican’s interpretation of Christianity might be flawed.
Bottom line is that I wonder whether these recent actions on the Vatican’s part are going to increase the number of people who decide to become “recovering Catholics.” I know a few of those already.
I just checked Amazon, and the good professor’s book is now UP another notch……to Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #15 in Books.
You’d think the Vatican might consider such an effect before they catapult somebody into the lime-light by criticizing them,
Yeah, Susan. If the Vatican denounces “Dating Jesus” it sure would boost your Amazon rating!
It would appear that the Church is being run by men not only old and celibate but stupid. I remember as a kid the Catholic Church’s list of banned books. Of course everyone wanted to read them!
I am a Protestant, but I remember reading the “Tropic of Cancer” precisely because it was supposed to be a dirty book.
Can’t eat pork, doesn’t try to make it illegal for everyone: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4r25xnpV51rt8sgdo1_400.jpg
Sorry, but the Vatican won’t stoop so low as to comment on a book written by a feminist or a fundamentalist or anyone else who isn’t a member of this exclusive club called the “Catholic Church”. Too bad for you Susan, I’d love to see your book shoot to #15!
Well, hell. All that’s left for me to do now is convert. I did once take a mail-order course from the Knights of Columbus, so I’m already on my way.
Keep it up, Vatican!!!!!! YeeHaaaa!!!!!! You folks have catapulted the good Sister Farely’s book to Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #14 in Books as of today at 6:40 PM. Up from only #15 yesterday.
Oh, and here is a helpful hint, Vatican. Sister Farley has said her book does not purport to describe the Catholic party line, and yet you have torn into her anyway.
Well, Susan Campbell’s “Dating Jesus” also doesn’t purport to describe the Catholic party line, so in the interest of fairness shouldn’t you tear into Ms. Campbell, too? Just askin’. You could help out her sales a lot…….
