  1. See there? We didn’t have to subsidize American companies. The Invisible Hand of the Free Market will take care of us. We’ll just buy the technology from Germany. That is, if they’ll sell it to us.

  2. Cynical Susan

There was an article in Our Local Paper the other day about a Middletown company that’s installing solar panels — from China. It seems like there’s something wrong with this picture:

“Silvestrini is not happy that the United States is levying tariffs of about 33 percent against Chinese-made solar panels, as officials determined factories are selling them below the cost of making them. China has bought solar panel factories as a nationalist industrial policy, and the glut of panels as a result has driven worldwide prices down.

“The legal jobs, accounting jobs, electrician jobs, those are the jobs we’d like to see in the U.S.,” Silvestrini said, and even as solar panel manufacturers in the United States shut down because of the Chinese, the amount of installations has blossomed as solar panels get cheaper and cheaper.

“Some of Greenskies’ competitors are large corporations that make solar panels and install solar farms using their own panels. “Their manufacturing equipment side is underwater,” he said. “When we go to toe to toe, we enjoy an advantage. We were perfectly happy with low-cost equipment from China.” “
