Tammy Duckworth for Congress

Have you been keeping up with this? What is Joe Walsh’s damage, d’ya think? Should we be worried?

  1. Haven’t seen much of Walsh. I’ve been watching more of the Chris Christie Show. That’s almost as good as The Sopranos. Governor Snooky is going to get a freeway exit ramp named after him if he gets the VP nomination.

I don’t think Duckworth has much to worry about. The only thing we should be worried about is how someone as unhinged as Walsh can get into Congress.

    • Gov. Snooki. Priceless. The thing I worry about is this: Is Joe Walsh the best the party has to offer? Really?

      • The best?
        I don’t know. What’s “best”?
Republicans in Illinois think so. Republicans generally seem to identify with that kind of bullying style…shouting people down…faux authoritarian righteousness. It’s been a trend since 2008. Any kind of empathy is seen as weakness.

      • I don’t think the question any longer is “who is the best the party has to offer?” Now it appears that the “conservative” candidate will be the person who resonates best with those who will vote in the conservative primary.

And who are those voters? The same folks who the Republicans were pandering to during those interminable Republican “debates.” The same people who, when the moderator asked Ron Paul if he would simply let an uninsured young person die of medical problems, cheered and shouted “Yes!”

In other words, wingnuts vote for wingnuts.

There ARE sensible Republicans who have respectable points of view, even if some of us might disagree with them. The trouble is, if you are sensible the wingnuts probably won’t vote for you in primary, so you don’t even get to “candidate” status.

  2. Cynical Susan

Funny, I don’t seem to recall Democratic candidates saying that John McCain made too much of his service / imprisonment / injuries. Or did I just not tune in to the right shows?

    • There were some shots at McCain for emphasizing his military service/POW experience, but I don’t remember any of it coming from other candidates. I could be wrong.
McCain took a shot at John Kerry once for talking about his military service.
A couple old links from Benen at Washington Monthly…
      McCain’s one track mind
      ‘Underusing’ the POW story

Any candidate emphasizing/exploiting their military service opens themselves up to “swiftboating”…criticism from other vets, challenges from the media, etc…but a candidate attacking an opponent with the bona fides of Duckworth for emphasizing her military service, the adversity she’s had to overcome as a result of that service, and how it has influenced her continuing commitment to public service exhibits a foolhardy desperation that is really quite embarrassing to watch…regardless of party affiliation.

  3. Isn’t that the Republican way? Don’t serve in the military and denigrate those that did, especially those those who have limbs blown off. Max Cleland comes to mind.

Yes, and when, in the 2008 campaign, someone asked if any of Romney’s sons were in the military, he said something to the effect of “they’re serving their country by working to make me president.” Something like that.
