They’re really wonderful, aren’t they? I’d like to see more of Lewis Black, myself. Love Jon Stewart and don’t want to take a minute away from him, but I’d like to see more of Black.
Black’s mainstream now.
He has a movie out and everything.
He’s as freaked out about it as anyone.
Some of my favorite stuff of his can be seen on The Daily Show.
No. I’d love to, though.
His webpage has a trailer for the movie.
And I always get a laugh from his take on religion. Warning: Language Alert!
Feel free to delete, DJ.
I believe we’re all grownups here. Thanks for the alert to the naughty words. Those who prefer not to hear them shouldn’t click on the link. Fair enough?
My MIL won’t hear of God as “her”. She wants God to be a him, “Our Father”, as in the Bible and as Jesus called “him”. I prefer a genderless God and “her” is as good as “him” as far as I’m concerned. After all, if Jesus spoke of God as his “Mother”, no one would have listened during those times. When you think our creating life, you think of the mother.
“”After all, if Jesus spoke of God as his “Mother”, no one would have listened during “those times. ”
There’s the thing, right? “Women can’t be priests because Jesus wasn’t a priest.” (Of course I’ve also heard that women shouldn’t sing bluegrass because Bill Monroe wasn’t a woman, but ………)
And a woman couldn’t be a priest 2000 years ago because women had no rights in those times. So, because of that, who can and cannot become a RC priest today is limited and frozen in time from 2000+ years ago. ???
Priscilla Herdman put together a song using a speech by Sojourner Truth called “Ain’t I A Woman,” in which Truth says, at a Woman’s Rights Convention in 1851,
“And that man says
Women can’t have as much rights as a man
‘Cause Christ wasn’t a woman.
Where did your Christ come from?
From God and a woman.
Man had nothing to do with him.”
Love that speech. I’ve also read — as with the Serenity Prayer — some discussion as to whether Sojourner Truth actually made that speech, which is one of my favorite, ever. But most scholars don’t argue. I wish I could have heard her give it. Here’s the rest of it: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/sojtruth-woman.html
Thank you Leftover! I’ve only ever seen Black on The Daily Show, so I mightily enjoyed this extended riff. (And then of course had to check out a few more videos and become totally distracted from what I’m SUPPOSED to be doing, yeah, thanks a lot!) What timing he has. Worth studying for anyone who wants to do any sort of public speaking, not just comedy.
Here’s one more tidbit from my visit to Cambridge. Ring the Alarm was a dance exhibition and contest. These guys were pretty good. The video stinks, but hopefully you’ll still enjoy it. You might hear me cheering them on…
I’m inclined to stay with Carlin on the gender question…….
God must be a Man, because no woman would ever allow things to get this screwed up.
Do you miss him? I do.
Yes.
But I hear a lot of Carlin in Jon Stewart and Lewis Black.

No. I’d love to, though.

I can understand that sounding weird to people, but I am tired of the male being the medical model, myself.

But Bill Monroe was born of a woman, and that oughta count for something, dammit.

“Women can’t be priests because Jesus wasn’t a priest.”
Oh the embarrassment — that should of course have read “…because Jesus wasn’t a woman.” But you all knew that.

According to the theology in the Epistle to the Hebrews, Jesus indeed is the Great High Priest.
So, there!
We did. We’ve spent enough time together to read each other’s mind(s).

Did you film this? This is awesome!
No, it was filmed by some other amateur. I thought their body percussion style was fun to watch and hear.
I don’t think I could do these moves for even two minutes. Very impressive.
