Forget PRENDA

A few days ago, the House of Representatives defeated the oddly named Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (you can read it here: BILLS-112hr3541rh) — which would, according to Ms. magazine:

impose criminal penalties on doctors who perform an abortion for a woman who seeks the procedure on the basis of the gender of the fetus.

and would

have also prohibited federal funding for organizations that do not comply and medical professionals would have been required to report any suspicions of sex-selective abortions.

Meanwhile, Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Florida, says the proposed legislation was not really about protecting baby girls, but about criminalizing abortion.

Meanwhile, Soraya Chemaly has a fresh take on this at Huffington Post:

The immorality in question isn’t in the use of tools to select babies, it is in the use of misogyny to inform culture and mandate the elimination of girls in preferences for boys.

In order to address the sex ratio imbalance we have to acknowledge and challenge the root causes, namely dehumanization and elimination of female humans.

And thanks, DickG., for the link.

    1. I want a job where I come up with ways to spend money that’s not mine. I think I’d be really really good at it.
