Another Trayvon Martin, this one in Milwaukee

Darius Simmons, 13, was recently shot to death as he brought his family’s trash cans in from the curb.

The shooter, Darius Simmons’ 75-year old neighbor, has pleaded not guilty. The family had just moved to their new neighborhood because the mother, Patricia Larry [pictured], wanted to be in a safer place.

As Kevin Powell at The Guardian asks, when will America learn?

And thanks, Sharon, for the link.

  1. If I were a cynical person, I’d start to think that maybe this epidemic of murders of black children had to do with something in the collective unconscious that’s come to light since November 2008.

    1. I’m glad you’re not a cynical person. Because that would suck, a trend like that.

  2. I’m being too paranoid, I know. Still, I’m glad theze folks don’t have access to a time machine.

  3. I’m not convinced, from what I’ve read, the facts of these two cases are similar enough to characterize Darius Simmons as “another Trayvon Martin.”
Darius Simmons and his mother are the victims of a cold-blooded, premeditated murder.
Zimmerman has a defense…of sorts. Spooner has none.

And a link to the ISO from someone other than me. I find that uplifting.
    Thanks, Sharon.

    1. Birds of a feather. Yes, this particular case seems built on…murder. The older man “thought” the younger man had stolen guns from his house, so he shot him.

      1. And Zimmerman, empowered to legally carry a weapon by the local police…acted with a sort of “quasi-authority” by way of a Neighborhood Watch organization sanctioned, (more empowerment), by the local police.

Spooner is a cold-blooded murderer. I hope they put him away for a very long time.

  4. “After police arrived, Darius’s body remained on the sidewalk, while his mother was questioned in a squad car for approximately two hours. During the investigation of the shooting, they searched Larry’s home again. Finding nothing relevant to the homicide, they nevertheless proceeded to arrest Darius’s older brother on account of truancy tickets.

“In contrast, members of Spooner’s family were reportedly allowed to re-enter their home and remove “items” – despite it being part of the crime scene. ”

    Stunning.
