Why all the fuss about NFL concussions?

bullis_headgear_2_360_usl_strohAnd next to no consideration of how concussions affect women?

I wrote this for Connecticut Health Investigative Team, C-HIT. Once again, it looks like the research money goes to the dudes.

  1. You should email this article to Dr. Ann McKee, leading CTE researcher. She took over the work of Dr. Bennet Omalu when the NFL harassed him to the point of quitting. (He has since returned to the research, from what I hear. Sony is making a movie about him starring Will Smith.) This sounds like the kind of necessary research she referred to in the Frontline/PBS League of Denial documentary. Research definitely needs to be expanded. Sports…especially contact sports…are such a big deal in American culture. We need more data.

I’ve suffered three serious concussions. The first when I was 10. The second when I was 20. The third in 1991. All three landed me in the hospital. The last one resulted in some very dire warnings from the physicians treating me. Scared the hell out of me. Still does.
