Tennessee Senators say no to making Bible official state book

imagesAfter the Tennessee House voted to move that state closer to a theocracy, the state’s senators said no, and sent a bill that would accomplish this odd feat to committee — which is the same as killing the bill.

Similar efforts have been tried in Louisiana, and Mississippi. What probably seemed like a good idea in the hallway runs afoul of the federal and state Constitutions, as it turns out. And why this empty gesture? What are those legislators afraid of? That the Bible will slip away without their endorsing it? As Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery III said in a statement:

“I am quite confident that the Bible’s distinguished place in history will not be diminished in the absence of a state’s endorsement.”

  1. I think it’s their symbolic way of putting lamb’s blood on the doorposts. Pat Robertson, Inc. has been telling them for decades that God is going to punish/is punishing America for abortion, gay marriage, letting women vote, labor unions, the income tax, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, letting Muslims build mosques, etc., etc., etc. Many people believe this. This gesture lets God and everyone else know that “it’s not our fault, we tried to stop it,” so that when the Apocalypse/Rapture/whatever finally happens, they will be spared, maybe. That’s my guess.
