If we applied common commentary tropes to the Waco massacre:

indexIf we approached the recent Waco massacre that occurred during a biker beef (where nine people were killed, and more than 1,000 weapons have been found) the way we approach other news events:

  • We would ask “Where are the fathers?” as Republican Ted Cruz did after the Baltimore uprising.
  • We would look for moderate bikers to explain that those knuckleheaded idiots in Waco are really, really outliers, as we expect Muslims to do every time one of their knuckleheads gets lose.
  • Am I missing one? I can’t tell.

But no. We are content to believe that these folks are on the fringe and in no way represent the rest of us.

  1. Ani-hero worship…especially…<i.white ant-hero worship…and Biker lifestyle have been romanticized in American culture for a very, very long time. Start at The Wild Bunch and cruise right up to Sons of Anarchy. Start at gangster and detective dramas that made people like Dashell Hammet, James. M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Al Capone, famous, (and helped propel the film careers of people like Humphrey Bogart, John Garfield, James Cagney and Richard Widmark), cruise on through J.D. Salinger, Ian Flemming, Phillip Roth, Anthony Burgess and even Stephen King. Turn on the TV. The hero-as-outlier has been a consistent theme. Start at Maverick and Bat Masterson and cruise right up to The Wire, Dexter, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Justified, Chicago PD, and even Disney’s Once Upon A Time.

Popular uprisings connected to social injustice, however, rarely, if ever, fare well in our culture. It can take decades, sometimes generations, for Americans to be exposed to any moderate depiction of those types of events in our media. And by then, more often than not, Truth is something manufactured by some artiste or political opportunist more concerned with public appeal and personal exposure in a marketplace than accuracy.

The fact of the matter is, 1%ers like Bandidos and Cossacks are, indeed, fringe groups…outliers. Outlaws. It’s part of the identity they craft for themselves. And like it or not, Muslim extremism has a greater claim on the mainstream in that culture right now than moderates.

Another fact of the matter is: What our government perpetrated at The Branch Davidian compound near Waco makes a 1%er parking lot melee look more like a picnic than a massacre.
