Some Republicans are pushing OTC birth control

indexSens. Cory Gardner of Colorado and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire are leading the push for over-the-counter birth control pills.

And you know what? They’re Republicans.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists approves. So Democrats? What say you?

Thanks, Leftover, for the link.

  1. The cynic in me says they are in favor of it because it shifts costs to individual women. OTC drugs aren’t typically covered by health insurance. It would at least keep Hobby Lobby and their ilk from having any say in the matter.

  2. Just to be clear…According to Politico, ACOG, Planned Parenthood and NARAL support the Patty Murray (D-WASH) alternative legislation because it “would ensure contraceptives purchased without a prescription would still be covered by insurance,” something the Gardner/Ayotte legislation does not do. ACOG called the GOP bill a “giant step in the wrong direction.”

Bipartisan support on the issue falters on the issue of mandated insurance coverage for nonprescription contraceptives.
