Here. The Guardian called it “the world’s greatest diplomatic success.”
Here are the results. Here’s Grist’s take on it. Your thoughts?
“The Paris accord is a trade agreement, nothing more. It promises to privatize, commodify and sell forested lands as carbon offsets in fraudulent schemes such as REDD+ projects. Essentially, those responsible for the climate crisis not only get to buy their way out of compliance but they also get to profit from it as well.”
–Alberto Saldamando, legal counsel for the Indigenous Environmental Network
“It’s outrageous that the deal that’s on the table is being spun as a success when it undermines the rights of the world’s most vulnerable communities and has almost nothing binding to ensure a safe and liveable(sic) climate for future generations.”
–Nick Dearden, director Global Justice Now
“The fossil fuel industry’s lingering chokehold over U.S. politics leaves the Paris Agreement a nearly empty vessel…inadequate…inequitable…reflects a continued denial of fundamental climate realities.”
–Carroll Muffett, president, Center for International Environmental Law
I’m not seeing any mechanism for enforcement. I’m not seeing any mention of doing something to prepare for the inevitable environmental catastrophes due to anthropogenic influence on climate change. I’m not seeing any commitment to reduce industrial air and water pollution. (Greenhouse gasses are just part of the problem.) I’m not seeing any willingness to clean up the mess we’ve already made. I’m not seeing any commitment concerning alternatives to fossil fuel. I’m not seeing anything but bullshit. Bullshit hailed by The Drone King as “the best chance to save the one planet we have.”
“[T]he greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet.
… We’re going away. Pack your shit, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Maybe a little Styrofoam … The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas.
… The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system.”
