The Bundy Militia sure knows how to monopolize media attention.
Juliette Kayyem at CNN, among others, says this latest Bundy Militia action amounts to terrorism.
They are dangerous, they are unforgiving, they are flouting federal law, they have a political purpose and they clearly are willing to use violence to get their way. Simply because they are not Muslim jihadists does not mean they are authorized to threaten or use violence to support their political cause.
Personally, I think that’s a bit of a stretch. If prior experience can be used as a guide, the Bundy Militia will continue to monopolize media attention for a while, negotiate a settlement with the authorities. and walk away scot-free with another victory notched on their handgrips.
Is this an act of treason, do you think? How is it that a group can invade U.S. land, solely occupy it, and defend their occupation with threat of violence toward law enforcement and U.S. military, and not be viewed as enemies of the United States? It looks a lot like an act of war against the federal government. This, because two people committed arson and they don’t like the minimum sentence given to them? And, they hold a grudge because they can’t use land they don’t own free of charge? That’s not how America works. They are anti-patriots. I don’t understand the tolerance of these acts.
Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.
18 U.S. Code ยง 2381 – Treason
What we’re calling the Oregon Gunmen, from WaPo here, based on what appears in 15 “major news outlets” surveyed by Christopher Ingraham.
“Oregon” gunmen probably isn’t accurate either as the leaders and those who have revealed themselves to the media aren’t from Oregon. The folks convicted of the arson charges who, by the accounts I’ve seen, turned themselves in to law enforcement today, said through their attorney the Bundy Militia doesn’t speak for them.
They seized a bird sanctuary in wintertime? Maybe we should send in the Audubon Society. Busloads of retirees in sensible shoes asking to use the restroom and demanding the AARP discount in the gift shop. That’ll fix ’em.

Treason? I don’t know…

I’m sticking with right-wing extremists.

Or just seal the place off and wait them out.
