This made me think.
Privilege comes in many forms. We each carry with us a variety of privilege and lack of privilege. Macklemore’s comment on being the same as the police (separated by badge, baton, can of mace) boils everything down to race. We are all so much more than that. He can walk away from the people who live on those streets and from the police who try to keep people safe in a high crime area, because of his wealth. (Are some police rotten? Yes. Are some police protectors of all and wonderful? Yes.)
I am a big fan of what Dr. King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Privilege should not be. It is unearned. It is an injustice that should be addressed, and it includes race, economic means, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, age, religious affiliation, physical attributes/beauty, family/friend support, access to nutrition & health care, disabilities…
I hope we can, as a society, see each person as a fellow human who is unique and equally worthy of love and support. We are all connected. We are one.
