Justice Dept. walks away from debtors’ prisons

webct_upload_appletThe Justice Department said last week that holding people in jail because they can’t pay a fine is unconstitutional.

This has been an effort on the part of several organizations, including the Southern Poverty Law Center.

  1. I read where the DOJ is disconnecting itself from the for-profit prison market. (WaPo)

    No improvement to the bottom line, apparently, despite providing fewer correctional services and less safety and security. And some bad press this year.
