The changing face of American immigrants

So Pew Research Center has looked at where this country’s immigrants have come from in the last 40 or so years. Interestingly, last fiscal year, most of our immigrants came from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Phew, what a weekend!

screenshot-2017-01-29-09-26-37As I write this, protests have gone on and are being planned all over the country (including one scheduled by CAIR at  Bradley International Airport here in Connecticut) over an executive order signed by the Republican president on Friday night. (This is an old hat trick used by despots everywhere — do  your dirty work when newsrooms already decimated by corporate ownership are even more sparsely inhabited.)

The order banned immigrants from seven countries, none of which have any business ties with the Republican president. Here are some of the countries with whom the Republican president does have business ties — and studies show, says the New York Daily News:

…that nearly 3,000 Americans were killed by citizens from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt in the same time period — with the bulk of those killed being victims of the 9/11 attacks. Yet, people from those three countries are still welcome to apply for U.S. visas and travel permits.

Even more interestingly, people from the seven countries — Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen — according to the Cato Institute — yes, the conservative Cato Institute:

…have killed zero Americans in terrorist attacks on U.S. soil between 1975 and the end of 2015.

Late on Saturday, federal Judge Ann M. Donnelly issued a temporary stay. And so the fight begins. ‘Murica!

Oh, and because this is a snarky blog masquerading as a religion blog, here’s your scriptural reference:

Succinctly, baby Jesus is crying

screenshot-2017-01-25-22-37-00Tuesday was a bad day for the environment.

Wednesday was a bad day for immigrants.

And today? Trump’s in Philly, at a GOP retreat. Might that take his attention from destroying the planet and ruining people’s lives?

Immigrant? Or real American? (Just watch)

Here are some cities who intend to remain sanctuaries

shutterstock_278842367What the president elect will actually do in regard to so-called sanctuary cities is anybody’s guess, but he has promised — and this could change — to cut off federal funding to so-called sanctuary cities that shelter immigrants who are here without proper documentation. Those cities have promised a fight.

Not included on the CityLabs list is New Haven, which has also vowed to fight.

And another thing…

And thanks, Helen, for the link.

No, they’re not taking our jobs

unamerica-indianA new study from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine says that immigrants are not taking our jobs. The report also addresses whether immigrants burden government budgets, but that’s another story.

(By the way? That links takes you to a page where you can download it for free, as I did. I thought I could download it and then share it, but no. They saw me coming.)

(Be warned. It’s 509 pages.)

In short, in regard to they’re-taking-our-jobs thing, the report said:

  • In the long term, there is little to no negative effect on overall wages and employment on native-born workers.
  • Some immigrants who came earlier and were still in low-wage jobs still earn less and have difficulty finding jobs because of newer arrivals.
  • Teenagers who drop out of school are affected, though not as much as you might imagine.
  • Highly skilled immigrants have a positive impact on the economy. And they create jobs.
