I don’t know, I have mixed feelings about myself being so amused by some of these images. I mean the appearance of this cop in the original video just being so nonchalant pepper spraying these kids, like old man Wilson down the street spraying the weeds in his garden. Is amused cynicism an okay response to this kind of thing?
Excellent question. I guess my first reaction was I wanted to cheer, because as heinous as was this act — and I believe it was heinous — I appreciated that people could react not with violence, but with humor. I was reading English translations of some of the protest signs in Tahrir Square, and a woman held one sign that said, “Why don’t you leave? Are you stuck to the chair?” and I just got simple over that. It was directed at Mubarak and it was just so…cool? Non-violent? Matter-of-fact? Human? Dunno. I can’t say what should be a reaction to this. I just appreciate this one.
There’s an animated version of this that is fairly hilarious…almost as good as the ones of him spraying the baby seal on the ice or the kittens.
Do you think said cop is right now surfing the web to see where he’s landed? How surreal that must be.
Will said officer suffer any punishment for his original actions?
This is the last thing I’ve seen: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCoQqQIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fnational%2Fhigher-education%2Finvestigation-calls-for-resignation-follow-spread-of-calif-university-pepper-spray-video%2F2011%2F11%2F20%2FgIQAcWivdN_story.html%3Ftid%3Dpm_national_pop&ei=U_HLTobLDujq2AW8s-i7Dw&usg=AFQjCNECRwOB2ua0uOTqu8QUo_1hhy8VLQ&sig2=vEc7HmswXjHbgOIUmgxOjQ Unpaid leave and an investigation.
You have to wonder (well, you don’t HAVE to) what was going through his mind. How would that work?
