I don’t doubt the statistics. (17th and 25th ain’t bad considering our healthcare is ranked 37th, life expectancy is 51st, infant mortality is 49th and 34th in child poverty.)
But I am definitely not a fan of Michelle Rhee and her StudentsFirst advocacy group for neoliberal reform…abolishing teacher tenure; permitting more teachers without formal education training to take charge of classrooms; evaluating teachers in large measure by their students’ growth on standardized tests; and expanding charter schools, which are publicly funded but typically run by private corporations, including for-profit management firms.

Education, not indoctrination, is the answer.
