Don’t blame the poor for our crappy economy

rfFrom the Economic Policy Institute:

Since 1979, increasing inequality has been the largest poverty-boosting factor, outweighing racial identity and family structure and completely eclipsing the effects of overall economic growth and educational attainment in driving down the poverty rate.

  1. I disagree with Davis on one thing:
Demographics and personal behavior have no place in any discussion on public economic policies to address poverty. None.

Poor people don’t cause poverty. Capitalism causes poverty. It demands it. If too much poverty is causing concern amongst capitalists, fix capitalism. Any allusion to demographics and/or personal behavior in policy debate among capitalists rationalizes and reinforces the existence of the worst characteristics of capitalism.
